A 73-year-old Dawson County man was killed Tuesday afternoon when he attempted to cross Ga. 53 on a four-wheeler and was hit by an oncoming pickup truck near Perimeter Road.

Maj. Tony Wooten with the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office said the man’s name cannot be released at this time.

“We are waiting to notify his family,” he said.

According to Wooten, the collision occurred shortly after noon.

The victim was following the rider of a second four-wheeler who had safely crossed the busy highway when he was hit, Wooten said.

“He was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries,” a spokeswoman with Georgia State Patrol’s Cumming Post said.

The roadway was shut down while troopers investigated the collision.

Wooten said the driver of the truck was not injured.
The wreck marked the county’s third traffic fatality of 2013 and the fourth death on Dawson County roads.
