Authorities are investigating a fatal accident at a South Forsyth steel company.

Forsyth County Fire Capt. Jason Shivers said the incident occurred at about 2 p.m. Tuesday at AP Specialty Metals on Grassland Parkway.

The man was identified as Jeffrey E. Thurman, 53, of Mayfield Drive in Cumming.

Thurman was crushed from the waist up after being pulled into a machine that takes flat sheet metal and rolls it onto a coil, Shivers said.

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and coroner are investigating.

Huggins said authorities had contacted the Occupational Safety and Health Administration about the incident.

Shivers said it is not clear how the man got in the machine.

"To my knowledge it was not witnessed," Shivers said.

"He was found by another employee. ... It's an unfortunate incident."

He said the fire department's hazardous materials unit helped remove the body from the machine.
