Thursday's shooting of a Cleveland father and son has turned into a murder investigation.

Tim Whelchel, 47, died shortly after the incident, Cleveland Police Chief John Foster said.

Jack McDonald, a 69-year-old roommate and friend of the victims, is charged with the murder, Foster said.
Whelchel's son, Scott Whelchel, 27, also was injured in the shooting but has since been released from the hospital.

Though the incident is still under investigation, Foster said it appears the shooting was sparked by a disagreement between the victims and McDonald.

Police responded to Whelchel's Cagle Street home at 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

Though Foster said police didn't initially know where the shooter was, they were able to get the victims to safety and set up a perimeter.

Foster said he then made contact with McDonald inside the home around 1 a.m. and convinced him to come outside.

Both victims were flown to Grady Hospital in Atlanta for treatment before Tim Whelchel died a short time later.
