Gainesville police have arrested a man in connection with an abduction at knifepoint Monday on Browns Bridge Road.

Rene Vargas, 19, of Lawrenceville, has been charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault and possession of a knife during commission of a felony.

Officers arriving at 2888 Browns Bridge Road learned a suspect had forced a female victim into a car at knifepoint and then drove her to Flowery Branch. From there, the suspect took the victim in a cab to the Mall of Georgia area, where they began walking toward Lawrenceville.

The incident happened about 11 a.m., said Cpl. Joe Britte, public information officer for the Gainesville Police Department. He said a daylight abduction was unusual, but “this day and age anything can happen.”

The Criminal Investigations Division received information that the suspect’s family lived in Lawrenceville, and they made contact with the suspect and victim walking on Buford Drive in Lawrenceville.

As investigators approached, the suspect ran away, and the victim was recovered without injury.

After an intensive search, the Lawrenceville Police Department apprehended the suspect and took him to the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

“There is a slight chance this could be domestic related,” Britte said, but the victim “definitely” knew the suspect.

Britte said he didn’t think the general public should be concerned about abductions because of this case.

“This was more of an isolated incident,” he said.

The investigation is continuing by both jurisdictions.
