A 33-year-old man surrendered to Gainesville police Sunday afternoon after holding his 4-year-old daughter hostage at knifepoint for 38 minutes.

Leslie Brinkley, 33, was charged with kidnapping and aggravated assault in the incident, which took place at 1:41 p.m. at Chicopee Crossing townhomes on Atlanta Highway.

Police got a call that somebody had a knife and was inside the home. The caller then hung up, said Cpl. Joe Britte, Gainesville police spokesman.

When police arrived, the child’s mother was outside the home “and advised us to his mental capacity and what he was going through,” Britte said.

Officers then “set up a perimeter and called in one of our hostage negotiators,” he said.

Investigator Brad Raper was able to convince Brinkley release the child. She was returned unharmed to her mother.

“What I can best gather from this is that (Brinkley) has had prior drug abuse and he’s been in and out of mental health (treatment),” Britte said.

Brinkley was charged with aggravated assault and cruelty to children, and “further charges are pending,” Britte said.

The suspect didn’t have any particular demands during the incident.

“He basically was frustrated,” Britte said.

Brinkley was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for a mental evaluation, he said.
