A Jonesboro man remains in custody after his arrest in connection with the delivery of about 30 pounds of suspected marijuana.

Victor Alfonso Mendoza, 21, has been charged by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office with one count of trafficking marijuana. His bond has not been set, a jail spokeswoman said Friday.

Sheriff’s Lt. Col. Gene Moss said a delivery service called authorities Monday about a suspicious package it had received. He declined to name the service.

“A drug dog alerted on the package,” Moss said. “Then the Forsyth County Sheriff’s drug unit delivered the package to the listed destination.”

Moss declined to say where the package was delivered, only that it appears the house was randomly chosen.

He said authorities set up watch and waited for someone to pick up the package, which was not addressed to the person who lived at the residence.

Investigators stopped Mendoza shortly after they watched him take the package and leave, Moss said.

A search later revealed the box held an estimated $30,000 worth of suspected marijuana.

“The marijuana was destined to be street dealt here,” Moss said.

Sheriff’s Lt. Gus Sesam said authorities have given the return address on the package to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration because it was from another state.
