A 20-year-old man is accused of seriously injuring his 3-month-old son around Christmas Eve by hitting the child on the head and dropping him on his head, police said.
Diego Gregorio Lucas was charged with aggravated battery and first-degree child cruelty. He was booked Thursday, Jan. 10, into the Hall County Jail, where he remains.
Gainesville Police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said on or around Dec. 24 Lucas did allegedly “maliciously cause bodily harm to (the) child by seriously disfiguring said child by striking the child on our about the head and/or dropping the child on its head, causing severe damage to the child” in the 700 block of Parkway Drive.
Holbrook said the child suffered hemorrhaging to the brain and broken ribs.
The boy was first taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center before being flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
“Doctors notified us of the severe injuries,” Holbrook said.
Holbrook said the child is still in serious condition.
Lucas requested a public defender, but one had not yet been assigned Friday, Jan. 11.
There is also an immigration-related charge for Lucas, according to Hall County’s booking log.
