Authorities are searching for a Lumpkin County inmate who escaped Tuesday from his hospital room at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Steven Smith, 27, is being sought by several law enforcement agencies, according to a statement released by Alan Roach, spokesman for the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office. Roach said the sheriff’s office was notified around 2 p.m. Tuesday that Smith had escaped. Gainesville Police officers, hospital security staff and the detention officer there started the search for the inmate.
