Logging truck runs off road into creek in White County

A Gainesville man driving a logging truck went off the road Monday and into a White County creek, according to authorities.

Gary Smith, 51, was driving the truck for Mountain Wood Products of Cleveland around 11:30 a.m. Monday, April 1.

Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Major Patterson said Smith failed to negotiate the curve on Ga. 254 westbound near Hogan Road.

“(Smith’s truck) continued off the right shoulder of the roadway and traveled into a creek,” Patterson wrote in an email. “(Smith’s truck) struck the embankment on the opposite side of the creek.”

The load shifted forward and hit the cab, and Smith’s truck ultimately overturned onto its passenger side.

After being extricated, Smith was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center by White County EMS for serious injuries.

Hospital officials said Tuesday, April 2 that Smith was in satisfactory condition.

Patterson said Smith was given a warning for failure to maintain lane.
