If you’ve been wondering about something in your community, Ask The Times is your place to get answers. The following question was submitted by a reader and answered through the efforts of our news staff.

Do you have any idea when El Azteca is opening in the Chattahoochee Center on Thompson Bridge Road? The sign has been up for quite some time.

The new Mexican restaurant, which was most recently occupied by Dos Gringos, has a business license and certificate of occupancy, but officials have been unable to reach the owner recently and aren’t sure when he plans to open, Gainesville Planning Manager Matt Tate said.

“He has what he needs to move forward,” Tate said.

The city’s main concern has been that the open sign is on all the time at the restaurant even though it has not opened. Tate said the city has tried to reach the owner to ask him to turn off the sign until he opens the restaurant.

“It’s causing some confusion,” Tate said.

Tate said it was a simple occupancy permit, as not much work was needed to make the building ready for the new restaurant.

And while the “El Azteca” name is on the restaurant, the sign near the road listing businesses in the shopping center still says “Dos Gringos,” another item that could cause confusion.

“Hopefully we will get a call back from him,” Tate said.
