Hall County’s legislative delegation heard requests during a series of meetings Thursday. They include:

Northeast Georgia Health System Inc.

  • Keep an eye on any changes or issues stemming from the federal Affordable Care Act that might affect local hospitals


Lanier Technical College

  • Provide money to staff new facilities.
  • Increase bond allocations to help upgrade older buildings, including adding space to support programs such as welding and allied health
  • Add welding and machine tool technology to the list of programs eligible for the state’s Strategic Industry Workforce Development grant
  • Provide equipment money to update machine tool technology and dental hygiene/dental assisting labs
  • Add new classroom building to the Oakwood campus

University of North Georgia

  • Add to a building at the Oconee County campus, which is at capacity with 2,500 students

Hall County Tax Assessors

  • Allow tax assessors, through a taxpayer-initiated process, to recalculate values of motor vehicles based on mileage and condition, then send the new valuation to the tax commissioner’s office. Taxpayer would then pay the new bill.

Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce

  • Continue finding ways to attract new industry and business through reducing taxes, developing new incentives and maintaining an educated workforce
  • Help with any legislation that would keep down costs stemming from the Affordable Care Act and provide companies ways to offer health insurance to employees in a cost-effective manner
  • Encourage the State Board of Education to find new ways to measure success in public schools

Hall County Solicitor’s Office

  • Support legislation that more clearly defines specific attributes of strangulation, one of the most lethal crimes in “intimate partner” violence
  • Modernize the “harassing telephone calls” law to include stalking, harassing and intimidation efforts on mobile devices and through social media

Brenau University

  • Maintain the Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant, which provides tuition help for Georgia residents at private colleges in the state

Gainesville City Schools

  • Divide education special purpose local option sales tax among school systems based on full-time enrollment numbers
  • Change law so undocumented students can attend a Georgia college or university without having to pay out-of-state or international tuition.
  • Support funding that would uphold funding of charter systems

Hall County Board of Commissioners

  • Support Glades Reservoir, a planned 850-acre reservoir in the Upper Chattahoochee River Basin of North Hall that could provide 30 million to 40 million gallons of water per day to Northeast Georgia residents
  • Provide more flexibility in the use of special purpose local option sales tax money
  • Ease regulations on counties with interbasin transfers
  • Replace the Hall County Civil Service Board with an administrative law judge

Hall County District Attorney’s Office

  • Allow prosecutors to file more accusations, taking the more serious cases to grand juries for possible indictment
  • Strengthen elder abuse legislation, such as making operation of an unlicensed personal care home a felony
  • Add gang-related offenses as an aggravated circumstance in a death penalty case

Hall County Board of Education

  • Oppose any additions to required curriculums for schools
  • Support pursuit of technical fields earlier in education
  • Oppose legislation moving the state toward election of superintendents

Hall County Juvenile Court

  • Support increasing funding to the Department of Family and Children Services to address needs of foster children

Hall County Public Defender’s Office

  • Elimination or scaling back of mandatory minimum sentencing, returning discretion to judges
  • Add a “Romeo and Juliet” exception to aggravated sexual battery cases, on par with the charges of aggravated child molestation and aggravated sodomy

Hall County Superior Court

  • Support increasing the salaries of judges
  • Support legislation to fund veterans treatment courts
