Lanier Tech told to slice budget another 2 percent

The Technical College System of Georgia asked technical schools such as Lanier Technical College to make another 2 percent in budget cuts Monday, said Lanier Tech President Mike Moye. The reduction comes in addition to the 6 percent systemwide cut already imposed. Moye said Lanier Tech has already implemented a 10 percent budget cut in anticipation that the Technical College System of Georgia will cut yet another 2 percent from this fiscal year’s budgets.

"I truly expect it to go to 10 (percent). ... If it turns out just to be 8 percent, there’s a possibility we could have money unbudgeted and that money could go toward next year’s cut," Moye said. "Next year, we’ll have a severe cut also."

The 8 percent cut amounts to $843,762 slashed from Lanier Tech’s current budget, Moye said. To absorb the cut, he said the school has moved to a four-day work week, is leaving positions unfilled, has cut back on equipment purchases and advertising, and is conserving utilities.
