Juvenile law expert speaking Thursday at Lakeview

J. Tom Morgan, district attorney of DeKalb County for 12 years and a specialist in prosecuting crimes against children, will speak to parents and students at Lakeview Academy on Thursday morning.

He will speak to any interested parents at 8:15 a.m. Thursday and to Lakeview’s Upper School students at 9:30 a.m. The public is invited.

Morgan is an advocate for children, speaking to thousands of teenagers and parents about Georgia laws that affect young people. He has been a speaker at the school each year since 2010.

He is a trial lawyer in private practice in Decatur. He specializes in criminal and civil litigation. He also was an assistant district attorney for nine years.

He is the author of “Ignorance is No Defense: A Teenager’s Guide to Georgia Law.”

Morgan has prosecuted and defended teenagers accused of breaking state law.

He served on the U.S. Advisory Board of Child Abuse and Neglect and chaired Georgia’s Child Abuse Prevention Panel. He is a founding board member of the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy Inc., which provides free counseling to victims of child abuse.

According to his website biography, Morgan has appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” the “Today” show, CNN's “Talkback Live,” Court TV and “48 Hours” and has been featured in People and Parenting magazines.
