JEFFERSON — With early voting nearly over, hundreds of Jefferson voters have already cast their ballots prior to next week’s elections.

During Monday’s voting session, the Jefferson City Council received an elections update.

“So far, 206 ballots have been cast and 19 ballots have been mailed out,” said Elizabeth McDonald, city clerk and elections superintendent.

“I think we are going to have a large turn out this year.”

During the meeting in the Jefferson Civic Center on Kissam Street, the group also approved an annexation and rezoning request for a 2-acre property on Legg Road. The actions were taken at the request of the property owners.

The Legg Road parcel was annexed into the city from the county and was rezoned from Agricultural Rural Farm District to Single Family Residential.

The city council also approved the water and sewer budget for the 2010 fiscal year. The operating budget for the water department decreased by 11.14 percent from fiscal year 2009 to fiscal year 2010. The new budget is $2.31 million, compared to the previous $2.59 million budget.

The sewer operating budget also decreased. The previous year’s budget was $2.08 million, this year it is $1.87 million- a decrease of
9.88 percent.

The group also approved the operating budget for the city’s planning and development department. The council approved a budget of $248,536 for the planning department for fiscal year 2010.

Early voting in Jefferson is being conducted at city hall on Athens Street and closes at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
