Gainesville Police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating human remains found in a wooded area Friday, June 21.

Police said the remains were found in an area off of Lee Street around 11 a.m. Friday.

“A local government agency provided information that led to the discovery of the human remains. This is still early in the investigation and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting the department in this case,” police said.

The lot investigated by police was on a street that has a dead end, situated behind a number of businesses near the intersection of John Morrow Parkway and Washington Street.

Police did not answer any questions Friday night related to foul play, the length of time the remains might have been at this location or what government agency provided information.

“We have no updates other than the GBI will conduct the autopsy. We won't know any more until we can access the autopsy report,” Sgt. Justin Martin wrote in an email.
