Another holiday season is in the books, this one was marred by a fatal South Hall wreck and a soggy New Year's Day.

Sunday was otherwise uneventful for returning travelers, gearing up for the year's first work week after a couple of holiday weekends.

Authorities reported a generally quiet day, which was boosted by sunny skies and temperatures in the low 50s.

On the roads, Georgia had 328 crashes involving 184 injuries, as worked by the Georgia State Patrol, since 6 p.m. Thursday, according to a report released Sunday afternoon by the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

Four people were killed in those wrecks, including Walter Hedges, 62, of Buford.

Hedges' motorcycle collided head-on with a pickup truck driven by Matthew Millwood, 22, of Flowery Branch. The wreck took place about 2:40 p.m. Friday on McEver Road at Radford Road.

Eleven people have died statewide in wrecks worked by all law enforcement agencies, according to state officials.

The holiday accident reporting period ended at midnight Sunday.

The weather, meanwhile, played havoc with outdoor plans on New Year's Day, as 1.37 inches of rain fell through early Sunday at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville, according to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

It didn't deter, however, the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club's 14th annual Polar Bear Swim fundraiser at the Lake Lanier Olympic Center. Tim Watson, 2010 club president, said, "We've never had a rainy jump."

Nearly 100 people kicked off the new year with a plunge into Lake Lanier.

Because of the rainfall, the Hall County area starts the year ahead on rainfall.

That's a reversal of 2010, when actual year-to-date totals trailed the normal year-to-date amounts for much of the year, which ended with an 11-inch deficit.

As of Tuesday, all of Hall County was experiencing "abnormally dry" conditions, with much of neighboring Gwinnett and Forsyth in "moderate drought," according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

The weather is expected to be mainly dry through Saturday, with a slight chance for showers only on Wednesday. Temperatures are expect to hover in the low 50s to upper 40s through the week.
