Three people were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, and a man was in police custody following a hit-and-run during the late afternoon rush hour Thursday on Old Oakwood Road.

Oakwood Police Chief Randall Moon said two separate wrecks involving three cars each happened about 5:15 p.m. on Old Oakwood Road near the Wayne Farms poultry plant. The accidents were about 100 feet from one another.

An Oakwood police officer was investigating the first wreck, which happened after a pickup lost a load of cleaning supplies, when the second wreck occurred nearby, Moon said.

An alleged drunken driver rear-ended a car that contained a man and a young boy and then kept driving, Moon said.

Police gave chase, pursuing the driver to the Millwood subdivision, where he ditched the car and tried to flee on foot, Moon said. He was captured soon after.

The driver, whose name was not immediately available, was arrested on charges of DUI, fleeing/attempting to elude and hit-and-run.

Three people, including the boy, were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center by ambulance for complaints of minor injuries, Moon said.
