Pass rates for first-time test takers

Hall County students again surpassed the state average in all areas of the Georgia High School Graduation Test.

According to numbers released Wednesday by Hall County Schools, students scored as follows on the four test sections: 94 percent passed English, 90 percent passed math, 97 percent passed science and 85 percent passed social studies.

Those numbers exceed the state levels by between 3 and 5 percentage points on each test.

"We're certainly encouraged by the fact that in spite of our challenging population that our system continues to outpace the sate," Superintendent Will Schofield said.

Gainesville City Schools results and school-specific numbers for Hall County have not been released yet.

Graduation tests will be phased out starting next year and replaced with more heavily weighted end-of-course exams. Students who enter high school in fall 2011 will no longer need to pass the test to graduate.

"I, for a long time, have believed that (graduation tests aren't) a very appropriate measure of whether a student is ready to graduate," Schofield said. "I look forward to us moving to the end-of-course measures because I think it's a much more relevant measure of what a student has completed in those various disciplines."
