New lanes on Lanier Islands Parkway/Ga. 347 in South Hall, including a roundabout at Big Creek Road, opened Monday evening.

The July 29 opening is part of Georgia Department of Transportation efforts to widen Ga. 347 between McEver Road and Lanier Islands resort. The $10.4 million project has a completion date of Oct. 31.

Work began in late summer 2017 to widen the road from two to three lanes, adding a center turn lane along a 2.4-mile stretch, a 10-foot multi-use path on one side of the road and a 5-foot sidewalk on the other.

The DOT had expected the traffic shift to take place Monday, July 15, but put off the opening because contractors were "making some field adjustments in order to install the rest of the guardrail,” DOT district spokeswoman Katie Strickland said at the time.
