Hall County officials are considering a tax increase to balance the fiscal year 2015 budget.

Because of growth in the tax digest, or taxable property in the county, primarily due to reassessments of lakefront homes, the county would have to roll back the tax rate to 5.98 to remain revenue neutral in the next fiscal year.

But County Administrator Randy Knighton told The Times on Wednesday a proposal is on the table to keep the property tax rate at 6.25.

The 4.36 percent increase in property taxes would give the county an additional $1.4 million in revenue.

The Board of Commissioners will ultimately vote on where to set the tax rate when it meets for budget hearings later this month.

“I’m definitely against it,” Commissioner Craig Lutz said. “My point is this: If you promise that you’re never going to walk through a door, why open it?”

Commissioner Jeff Stowe said the proposal leaves the board with more options.

“In my opinion, I don’t see it as a tax increase when you keep your millage rate exactly the same,” he added.
