Hall County names interim administrator

Hall County Director of Human Resources Charley Nix will stand in as the interim county administrator after current Administrator Jim Shuler retires June 30, the county commission announced Thursday.

Nix will temporarily hold the position while a national search for a new administrator is conducted and will continue to act as the director of human resources during this time.

"He’s a good man," Commissioner Bobby Banks said.

Commission Chairman Tom Oliver said Nix was selected because as a current county employee, he will be able to transition into the position without being too closely involved with the commission on a regular basis.

"We think Charley will come with a fresh face," he said. "But he’s developed a rapport with the people, and they’re comfortable with him."

His duties as interim administrator will include interviewing potential candidates to permanently take the position.

Oliver said he thinks acting as interim administrator will give Nix the ability to "understand what it entails."

"It will give him more of an understanding of what we’re looking for," Oliver said.

The commission agreed the chairman and the county attorney would draw up a contract and allow the commission to decide on the new administrator. Shuler will act as a consultant for 90 days following his retirement on June 30.

Also at Thursday’s meeting, Commissioner Billy Powell proposed the county issue a letter endorsing Larry Dent, a former deputy commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation, in his bid for a seat on the State Transportation Board.

Commissioner Bobby Banks proposed installing a traffic light at the intersection of Spout Springs and Thurmond Tanner roads.

Commissioner Deborah Mack proposed a study into a discount card program for prescription drugs.
