Hall authorities warn of jury duty scams

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office has a Lt. Smith. But he won’t call you asking for money or personal information because you skipped jury duty and have active warrants for your arrest.

That’s the warning authorities are giving as jury duty scams continue to crop up.

The scammers will ask the people they call for Green Dot MoneyPak cards with money put on them to “release the warrants.”

One such scam cost a resident $500.

“Legitimate sheriff’s officials never give a head’s-up by calling to warn you of an impending arrest, missing jury duty or for any other infraction,” Hall County Deputy Chad Mann wrote in an email.

He said “authentic jury duty notifications are nearly always delivered by mail.”

Mann also warned that the scam artists try to “verify that they have called the correct violator” by asking for name, birthday, Social Security number and other details that could help them steal someone’s identity.

Mann said the best way to respond to these calls is by hanging up without providing any personal information. He added that the scammers can even manipulate caller ID to make it look like they are calling from the sheriff’s office.

Anyone with questions about the legitimacy of someone calling and threatening them with arrest warrants can contact the sheriff’s office’s Crime Prevention and Community Service Unit at 770-533-7659.
