Hall authorities rescue stranded campers

Hall County firefighters rescued four campers stranded on the Chattahoochee River on Monday morning.

“Apparently ... during the night their boat had floated away in the rains,” Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell said.

Authorities received a call at about 4:30 a.m. from the campers, who were about 2 miles north of Belton Bridge Park, off Belton Bridge Road in northeastern Hall.

Emergency responders headed by boat to the scene but were unsure they could navigate shallow parts of the river, so they contacted Gwinnett County’s swift water team.

“Our boat was able to locate and pick (the campers) up, so Gwinnett’s (team) was canceled,” Kimbrell said.

The campers, who had no injuries, were brought back to the park at about 6:15 a.m.

“Once we picked them up in our boat, they found theirs about 300 yards downriver tangled up in the trees,” the chief said.
