A potential heroin overdose subject was saved by Gwinnett County Police officers administering an antidote in time, according to a news release.

Wednesday’s case was the fourth for the department since it equipped officers with the Narcan/naloxone antidote.

Officers responded to a “person down” call around noon Wednesday, Cpl. Deon Washington said in a news release.

“The officer observed that the female’s hands and lips were turning blue and her breaths were becoming shallow,” Washington said. “As the officer continued assessing the female, she stopped breathing.”

The subject had recently been in a rehabilitation treatment program, Washington said.

“When the Narcan was administered, the female had a positive reaction to the medication and became responsive,” he said.

The woman was transported to a local hospital when the paramedics arrived.

The department first became equipped with the antidote in May 2015 and have 70 units available.

“The Narcan kits have been used a total of four times thus far with positive results,” Washington said.
