Gen. James Longstreet, who commanded I Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, lived in Gainesville after the Civil War and operated the Piedmont Hotel at 827 Maple St. in the late 1800s. He owned the property until his death in 1904. People from around the state gathered at Alta Vista cemetery Sunday, near his grave to remember the “Old War Horse.”
