Greater Hall chamber backs Evans on DOT board

The Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce is asking the Hall County legislative delegation to re-elect Mike Evans to the State Transportation Board.

The chamber has sent a resolution to the county’s state lawmakers in support of Evans, who is facing a controversial bid for a second term on the DOT board following his support of newly elected Commissioner Gena Abraham.

House Speaker Glenn Richardson has been critical of Evans’ vote. Richardson was supporting Vance Smith, a Republican state representative from Pine Mountain. Smith is chairman of the House Transportation Committee.

The chamber joins a chorus of Hall County support for Evans, including the city councils of Gainesville, Flowery Branch, Oakwood, Lula and Gillsville, as well as the Hall County Board of Commissioners.

Richardson is said to be supporting former State Rep. Stacey Reece, R-Gainesville, to unseat Evans.

The DOT board is elected by state senators and representatives from various Congressional districts. Evans, the DOT chairman, represents the 9th district.
