The head of a Gainesville-based organization that works with 51 city and county governments throughout Northeast Georgia is retiring Aug. 9.

Danny Lewis, executive director of the Georgia Mountains Regional Commission, has led the group since 2005.

He has otherwise worked in Georgia government since 1973, including posts in Cobb County, Douglas and Newnan.

The GMRC helps local governments in a variety of ways, including mapping services and grant writing.

“I have had the opportunity to serve the prettiest region of 12 (regional commissions) in the state,” Lewis said. “I have served with outstanding council members who have worked hard with this staff to make sure we manage our region of 660,000 population the best ever.”

Deputy Executive Director Heather Feldman will serve as interim executive director until Lewis’ replacement is named.
