With the introduction of Gainesville’s first elected mayor in 2014, the dynamics on the City Council shifted, playing out in several crucial and controversial votes. Previously, it took only a simple majority vote among five elected officials to amend a city ordinance, approve a resolution or grant a rezoning request, for example. The mayor was little more than an honorary title, a spokesperson’s role bestowed in a rotating fashion among the five-member council.
