The human resources director for the Gainesville school system is receiving a 15 percent raise, along with a new job title.

The Gainesville City Board of Education voted Monday night to bump Elfreda Lakey’s pay to $125,500 from $108,123.

"Elfreda was hired when we had (Curtis Bibb) employed as assistant superintendent," said Superintendent Steven Ballowe. "Currently, she is completing all duties of that position, thus the salary adjustment, as her transition is now complete with all associated duties of that position."

The board also voted to name Lakey an assistant superintendent. She had been an assistant to the superintendent.

Bibb, who at one time oversaw personnel and building maintenance, resigned in January 2007 after he had been arrested on drug charges in Charleston, S.C.

In December 2006, Lakey was moved to the central office to oversee human resources. She had served as principal of New Holland Core Knowledge Academy.

The board handed out other laurels to administrators Monday night.

They named David Shumake the associate superintendent and Shirley Whitaker an assistant superintendent.

Previously, Shumake was an assistant superintendent and Whitaker was an assistant to the superintendent.

The board also approved three-year contracts for Shumake, Gainesville High School campus principal Mike Kemp and newly named Gainesville Middle School campus principal Ken Martin.

The contracts "are intended to keep our leaders here," Ballowe said. "Too many folks want what Gainesville has."
