Gainesville police seek confirmation of reported bridge jumper

Gainesville police are asking for the public’s help in confirming a report of a person jumping off Thompson Bridge late Monday.

Lt. Brian Kelly said authorities still have not been able to confirm a report by a witness that a person jumped from the bridge after getting out of a black Toyota Tundra stopped in the northbound lanes of the bridge shortly after 11 p.m. Monday.

Police shut down the bridge and combed the shoreline for more than an hour late Monday in a fruitless search for a jumper.

The sole witness who claimed to see the person climb over the bridge barrier has remained "fairly adamant" about what he saw, Kelly said. But no one has come forward to report anyone missing, and a check of area missing persons reports also has been fruitless.

Police have held off on requesting the Hall County sheriff’s dive team until it has further confirmation, Kelly said.

Police ask that anyone who traveled along Thompson Bridge between 10:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Monday and saw a black Toyota Tundra four-door pickup truck to call Gainesville police at 770-534-5254. Tips may be anonymous.
