Gainesville police get new captain
25-year veteran chosen to replace Sherman

Carol Martin was promoted Tuesday to captain with the Gainesville Police Department, filling the vacancy left by Maj. Paul Sherman’s promotion.Chief Brian Kelly said Martin, a 25-year veteran of the department, will begin her new position Monday.“I’m very excited and very honored. I just want to continue to do my best for the citizens here in Gainesville,” Martin said.Kelly selected Martin from six internal candidates, saying that “she has a great deal of knowledge and experience with our agency, the community and with the law enforcement profession,” according to a news release.Martin has served in patrol, traffic, criminal investigations and as program manager for both the State Certification and International Accreditation programs.“She’s a very well-rounded police officer with numerous years of experience.“I think she’ll be a great fit for this position,” Kelly said. Among the many roles Martin has held in the Police Department, she said one of her favorites was working in juvenile investigations.
