When Japan surrendered during World War II in August 1945, Charles Morrow was serving in Milan, Italy. When he was discharged a few months later, his family in Gainesville threw him a big birthday party.
Charles Morrow was angry at first. As a black man serving in the segregated U.S. armed forces, the Gainesville man resented that he had to be a servant, not a soldier. But as time passed, and especially today, as the 92-year-old Morrow reflects on his World War II years, his perspective changed.
