A murder victim found dead in a wrecked car in Pendergrass was identified Thursday as a 24-year-old Gainesville man.
Marco Antonia Sotomayor Rodriguez died from a single gunshot wound to the head inside a Jeep Grand Cherokee found wrecked Monday night in woods off Lipscomb Lake Road, Jackson County Sheriff’s Maj. David Cochran said Thursday.
Deputies were called to the scene at about 7:30 p.m. Monday after a passer-by saw the wrecked car’s headlights shining through the woods, Cochran said.
An autopsy at the state crime lab in Decatur confirmed the driver had been murdered.
Investigators believe the shooter was inside the car when Rodriguez was killed. No arrests have been made.
Detectives went to Marietta on Thursday to interview a woman who owned the car Rodriguez was driving.
Rodriguez was a self-employed construction laborer last known to live in Gainesville. He had relatives in Franklin County and Texas, Cochran said.
No drugs were found in the wrecked car, Cochran said.
“We have not found a motive yet,” he said.
