A Gainesville man succumbed to injuries he sustained in a two-vehicle accident Tuesday at McFarland Parkway and Ga. 400 in South Forsyth County.

According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, 49-year-old Franklin Smith was attempting to turn left onto Ga. 400 northbound from McFarland Parkway eastbound in a white 2006 Toyota Corolla around 11:53 a.m.

As he made the turn, a red 2011 Ford Mustang driven by a 53-year-old man who was traveling west on McFarland Parkway entered the intersection and struck the front passenger side of the Corolla.

Evidence on scene indicated Smith had the green arrow to make the left onto Ga. 400, said Deputy Epifanio Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived on scene, Smith was unresponsive “with an obvious head injury.”

He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He died due to his injuries later in the afternoon.

The driver of the Mustang was treated for minor injuries at the scene, Rodriguez said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Crash Investigation Unit with the Sheriff’s Office.

Charges are pending, Rodriguez said.
