A 64-year-old Braselton man is dead after the bicycle he was riding was struck from behind Monday, and a Gainesville man has been arrested in the case.
Georgia State Patrol Cpl. C.E. Parker reported that the bicyclist, David McLoy Fitzpatrick, was traveling east on Ga. 53 near Liberty Crossing around 1:30 p.m. when a Toyota Tundra struck the bike.
The truck traveled onto the shoulder of the roadway before returning to the road and driving away, according to the state patrol.
A witness followed the truck and was able to flag down the driver with flashing headlights. When the driver was informed he had struck a cyclist, he called Barrow County 911 to report the accident, Parker said.
Barrow County deputies responded and stayed with the driver at the Rockwell Church Road BP station until troopers arrived to interview him.
The driver was identified as Billy Eugene Bowers Sr., 51, of Gainesville, and he was charged with first-degree homicide, driving under the influence-less safe (meaning he had less alcohol than the legal limit), open container, leaving the scene of an accident with a death, following too closely, failure to leave sufficient distance for bicycle and operating a vehicle with improperly transferred license plate. Bowers’ truck had front-end damage.
