Gainesville High School Principal Tom Smith announced on Tuesday that he would retire at the end of the academic year.
The Gainesville City Schools Board of Education reluctantly accepted his decision at an evening meeting.
“In Tom’s tenure, we increased the graduation rate and AP accomplishments,” Superintendent Jeremy Williams told The Times. “His commitment to students and their future will continue to show for years. We wish him the best and will turn our attention to searching for his replacement.”
Smith came to Gainesville in 2015 after serving as principal at Union Grove High School in McDonough. He was hired to replace Principal LaCrisia Larkin.
Smith became assistant principal of Dutchtown High School in July 2004 and served in the position until becoming principal of Union Grove in 2007.
