Xiufeng “Julia” Zhu, a Chinese foreign language teacher at Gainesville High School, received the 2018 Georgia Chinese Language Educators Teacher of the Year Award for the state. This award honors outstanding educators for their “remarkable leadership and service to the Chinese language profession in Georgia.”

Also, Marissa Woo was selected as the 2017-2018 Chinese STAR Student for Gainesville High School. Each year, GCLE selects a high school student who is not only an excellent learner of the Chinese language but who also maintains good grades and is active in other extracurricular activities. As a ninth-grader, Woo is already taking Chinese IV, having the highest grade in her class, and is a member of the Chinese Club.  She is not a native Chinese speaker. Although her grandparents are from Taiwan, both of her parents were born and raised in the United States and do not speak Chinese.
