Gainesville Exploration Academy was evacuated Wednesday when some boiler equipment in the kitchen set off the fire alarm, Superintendent Wanda Creel said.
There were no injuries from the incident and no damage to the building.
A malfunctioning thermostat in a sink water heater shorted, according to Gainesville Fire Department spokesman Keith Smith.
Smith said one kitchen worker reported to firefighters that there were flames but kitchen staff extinguished them.
Fire personnel made sure the breaker to the water heater was off and waited for machinery to cool before they left, advising school officials to have the water heater repaired before allowing power to it again.
Creel said the equipment was not used to prepare food.
