A Gainesville funeral home can now add a chapel and parking, after council members unanimously approved rezoning of the property from residential to general business.

Wimberly & Jackson Funeral Home on Summit Street will be able to add about 3,200 square feet of building space. The new chapel will be able to seat about 160 people.

Co-owner and funeral director Felicia Wimberly said the expansion was needed to serve the community, and councilmembers agreed, saying that new parking would especially improve the area.

The Planning and Appeals Board had recommended approval on April 9.
