In time for Thursday’s 11 a.m. groundbreaking of the Walton Summit development at the former Green Hunter Homes on Atlanta Street, Gainesville officials transferred previously abandoned land to the project.
City Council approved the transfer of a section of Atlanta Street to the Gainesville Housing Authority that will add to the size of the new development, which will include 252 subsidized and market-rate units.
Before the transfer of property, the developer had planned to build a wall to buffer the new housing complex from the abandoned section, Gainesville Housing Authority Executive Director Beth Brown said Wednesday.
“We own the road up to where Peppers (Market) is,” Brown said. “They abandoned the rest of that up to E.E. Butler Parkway.”
City officials incorporated the abandoned section into the design of Walton Summit development to be constructed on the former Green Hunter Homes — a 131-unit housing development from the 1950s that was razed to make way for the public-private venture.
The Gainesville Housing Authority is partnering with Marietta-based Walton Communities LLC. The private company has developed similar housing projects in other Georgia cities and is bringing $10 million to Gainesville’s redevelopment effort through a tax-credit program.
Brown said she’s hopeful that the first phase of the development will be completed by January 2018.
Gainesville Mayor Danny Dunagan is looking forward to the groundbreaking today.
“It’s going to be a mixed-income development,” Dunagan said. “It will have subsidized and market-rate housing.”
Dungan said the three-phase development will include a senior component.
The mayor described the units that were razed as being “beyond repair.”
Walton has developed 16 affordable housing projects throughout the state, and most of them have targeted seniors.
“My feeling about this project is that it gives the people a better place to live,” Dunagan said. “It’s a huge deal for the city.”
