Former homeless men to be honored in Atlanta

More than 150 men, including several from Hall County, are being honored Thursday night in Atlanta for completing a one-year program through Georgia Works! that has helped them to transition to self sufficiency after being homeless at one time.

Georgia’s first lady Sandra Deal will be on hand to honor the men for their achievement during the fourth annual commencement. Former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin will be the keynote speaker at the event.

During the dinner at First Presbyterian Church, 1328 Peachtree St., the men will share their personal stories.

The men graduate to a full-time paying job and permanent housing, according to Doug Hanson, a Gainesville businessman who promotes the program as a model to help the homeless population in Hall County.
