A Flowery Branch man accused of stabbing an unidentified man at a party Saturday in Lawrenceville was later shot and killed by police at a separate location.

Robert Coleman, 30, was shot when Gwinnett Police responded to a burglary in progress at about 4:15 p.m. at 3849 Smokemist Trace in unincorporated Lawrenceville.

The residence was about three blocks from 3668 Willow Wood Way, where a few minutes after 4 p.m., police officers responded to a reported stabbing. According to witness accounts, the stabbing suspect was attending a party there.

“At some point during the party, the victim was stabbed,” Cpl. Jake Smith said. “The suspect fled the scene and ended up at 3849 Smokemist Trace. When two responding officers arrived at 3849 Smokemist Trace, they noticed that the front door was kicked in. When they began checking the residence, they encountered the suspect.”

Homeowners let police search the residence and shots were fired, according to a statement released by the department.

“At some point, shots were fired. The suspect died at the scene,” Smith said. “One of the two officers was shot in the leg.”

The injured officer was transported to the hospital, treated and released. A second officer searching the residence was not injured.

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, per departmental policy, as the Deadly Force Investigation Team continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
