Florida woman dies after accident in White County

A 65-year-old woman from Tavares, Fla., died Saturday, July 20, after a traffic accident in White County shut down Ga. 115 for about six hours.

Catherine Grant-Coons, 65, was driving eastbound in a 2001 GMC Savanna van when a tractor trailer traveling westbound “aggressively braked in an attempt to avoid a collision” with stopped traffic, according to a release from the Georgia State Patrol.

The tractor trailer “jackknifed” and rotated counter clockwise. As it rotated into the eastbound lane, it struck Grant-Coons’ vehicle head on with its right corner.

The driver of the tractor trailer, James Martin, 46, of Cleveland, was uninjured and charges are pending, according to post commander A.J. Allen with the Georgia State Patrol.
