Work could start in November on a new round of efforts to help with flood protection and water quality in Gainesville’s Flat Creek watershed. Gainesville City Council voted this week to award a $1 million contract to SpecPro Environmental Services of Oak Ridge, Tenn., for a restoration project focusing on an area around Hancock and Georgia avenues, particularly the old “fire” pond at the old Gainesville Mill. Plans call for converting the water body into a regional detention pond, resembling work done on the pond next to the Public Safety Complex off Queen City Parkway.
