Construction is set to begin Monday on the first highway project funded through federal stimulus money in Northeast Georgia.
C.W. Matthews Contracting of Marietta will resurface and widen the shoulders of Ga. 356 from Ga. 17/75 in Habersham County to Ga. 197 in White County, a nearly 11-mile stretch.
Work will occur weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flaggers will stop traffic and pilot vehicles will lead motorists through the work zone as weather permits, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.
The estimated construction cost is $1.7 million.
Other stimulus-funded projects are planned to begin later in the summer, including resurfacing U.S. 129 from Gillsville Highway to Monroe Drive and Mount Vernon Road from Thompson Bridge Road to Dahlonega Highway, both in Hall County.
