A Friday morning apartment blaze firefighters say was started by a juvenile did about $10,000 in damage.

Gainesville firefighters responded at about 10:30 a.m. to Norwood Apartments at 1617 Park Hill Drive to find smoke showing from a window of one of the units, according to a news release from the fire department.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the room where it started. Fire Marshal Chad Payne determined it was started by a juvenile playing with a lighter, according to the news release. The juvenile and his mother were at home and escaped the blaze.

“The Gainesville Fire Department would like to remind all parents to keep any type of lighter or matches out of the reach of children,” Capt. Keith Smith, a spokesman for the department, wrote in the news release.
