An Atlanta Highway business suffered $150,000 in damage from an early morning fire and water damage from a sprinkler system.

Gainesville firefighters responded to La Flor de Jalisco, 425 Atlanta Highway, just before 6 a.m. Friday to find heavy smoke in the store, public information officer Keith Smith reported.

“After forcing their way into the business, firefighters found four sprinkler heads flowing,” he said. “Firefighters ensured that the fire was out, turned off the sprinkler system and began working to remove smoke and water from the business.”

Fire Marshal Chad Payne determined a faulty condensation line pump on a refrigeration unit started the fire, burning the back of the unit and some nearby products. That activated the sprinkler system, which contained the fire.

“The sprinklers may have been flowing for quite a while before a passerby heard the ‘water gong’ sounding and called 911,” Smith said.
