Hall County Emergency Services crews recovered the bodies of a father and his step-son Saturday night who drowned earlier in the day in Lake Lanier.

Dive crews from Hall County Fire Services and the Forsyth County Fire Department found the two in the lake at Mountain View Park off of Browns Bridge Road, Hall County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Stephen Wilbanks said in a news release.

They were identified today as Jose Alfredo Benitez, 40, and Carlos Amaya, 14, both from Lawrenceville.

The preliminary investigation revealed the teen was trying to swim across a cove when he became distressed. When the father came to his aid, both swimmers went under and did not resurface, Wilbanks said.

The drownings were the first of the year in Lake Lanier, with the start of the summer tourism season still weeks away.
