An event Monday and Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Gainesville will allow older residents an opportunity to be “fitted” for their car.

CarFit will be 2-4 p.m. both days and appointments can be scheduled by calling 800-342-9819.

The program, developed by AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association, takes drivers through a 12-point checklist to make adjustments that will help the driver fit better in their car in an effort to be more comfortable and safe.

An occupational therapist will also be on hand to educate seniors about how to maintain and strengthen driving health.

By 2030, 1 in 5 people will be 65 and older, according to a news release from the University of Georgia Traffic Injury Prevention Institute, which is helping to put on the event. It’s estimated that number translates to 1 in 4 drivers.
The Georgia State Patrol and Governor’s Office of Highway Safety are also involved in putting on the event.
