The world’s greatest athletic competition came to Georgia 20 years ago, and many in Gainesville still remember the events. A nostalgic evening remembering the 1996 Olympic Games, when the world came to Lake Lanier, will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 at “Rio on the Water: Renewal of the Olympic Spirit” at Lake Lanier Olympic Park. The park at 3105 Clarks Bridge Road was the site of the canoe, kayak and rowing events of the 1996 games.
